The Mekong Delta begins barely an hour from Saigon, but the river changes everything: the pace, the food, the light. Whether you go for a day or a week, getting there is the first decision. Buses, tours, and private cars compared, plus which Delta town fits your trip.

My Tho sits 70 kilometers southwest of Saigon, 1.5 to 2 hours by road, making it the default Delta day trip. The classic circuit: boat to the river islands, coconut candy workshop, orchard walk, and a sampan ride down a palm shaded canal. It is well trodden and still lovely.
Ben Tre, across the river, is the quieter sibling: coconut country, sleepier canals, and fewer tour buses. Many travelers combine both in one day, and the contrast shows two speeds of Delta life. Our day trip ranking explains why this pairing sits near the top.
Eat deliberately down here. This is ca kho to country, and a riverside claypot lunch is half the reason to come. Read our ca kho to guide before you go so you order like you mean it.
The best My Tho mornings start at the Vinh Trang Pagoda before the boats. The 19th century temple complex is genuinely beautiful and nearly empty before 9 am, and it adds a cultural anchor to a day that is otherwise all river. Most tours skip it; go independently and you will have it to yourself.
Can Tho, 170 kilometers and 3.5 to 4 hours from Saigon, is the Delta's real capital and worth the overnight. The reason has a name: Cai Rang floating market, the largest in the Delta, where hundreds of boats trade produce at dawn in a scene that feels centuries old.
The market peaks between 5 and 7 am, which means sleeping in Can Tho and hiring a small boat before sunrise. Watching the boats gather in the mist, buying pineapple from a vendor's boat, eating noodle soup served boat to boat: this is the Delta at its most authentic.
Can Tho also makes the best base for deeper exploration: Phong Dien's smaller floating market, fruit orchards, and the road south to Chau Doc and the Cambodian border. Two days here beats one day twice over.
Can Tho's night scene surprises first timers. The riverside promenade fills with food stalls, the night market sells everything, and the Ninh Kieu wharf glows. Stay out late, sleep a few hours, and be on the water by 5 am: the floating market rewards the sleepless.

Public buses are the budget move. Futa Bus Lines, also known as Phuong Trang, runs comfortable coaches from Saigon's Mien Tay bus station to My Tho, Ben Tre, Vinh Long, and Can Tho for 80,000 to 150,000 VND (about $3.20 to $6). Book seats online or at the station; departures are frequent until late afternoon.
Group tours bundle transport, boats, guides, and lunch for 400,000 to 900,000 VND (about $16 to $36). They remove all friction and add a guide's context, at the cost of fixed schedules and tourist trap shopping stops. For a first Delta day trip, a well reviewed tour is genuinely good value.
Private cars cost 1,500,000 to 2,500,000 VND (about $60 to $100) for the day and buy complete freedom: leave when you want, stop where you want, skip the shopping stops. For families or groups of three plus, the per person math often beats the tour.
Mien Tay bus station, where the Delta buses depart, is a worthy experience in itself: organized chaos with clear signage and endless food stalls. Arrive 30 minutes before departure, buy snacks for the road, and watch Vietnam's internal transport system at work.
Start early whatever you choose. The Delta is best before 10 am, when the light is soft, the markets are active, and the heat is bearable. Afternoons are for slow boat rides and long lunches, not for rushing between sights.
Pack sun protection, insect repellent, and cash. ATMs thin out beyond the main towns, and boat operators, snack vendors, and small restaurants are cash only. A dry bag for electronics is wise on the smaller boats.
Respect the river. Do not swim in the main channels, keep trash out of the water, and buy from the boat vendors at the floating markets: your breakfast purchase is their livelihood. The 3 day Saigon itinerary shows how a Delta day fits a short trip.
Homestays on the river islands offer the deepest Delta experience. Sleeping in a wooden house over the water, waking to boat engines and roosters, eating breakfast cooked by your host family: it turns a day trip into a memory. Book through reputable platforms and confirm the boat transfers.
My Tho is 70 km, about 1.5 to 2 hours. Can Tho is 170 km, about 3.5 to 4 hours.
Yes for My Tho and Ben Tre. Can Tho needs an overnight to catch the Cai Rang floating market at dawn.
Public buses 80,000 to 150,000 VND. Group tours 400,000 to 900,000 VND. Private cars 1,500,000 to 2,500,000 VND.
